Get to know Omega-3

As I sit with other parents watching our children in their various activities, the topic of conversation so often turns to our family’s health issues. We are not only worried about our kids about also our aging parents. No matter what our age nutrition greatly influences our health.

Fats are an essential part of our diet that over the years people have become so misinformed about due to huge marketing campaigns promoting “Low or No Fat Products”

Omega-3 fats are polyunsaturated fats that protect against heart disease, have anti-inflammatory properties, aid in proper retinal and brain development, and improve focus  in children and adults.

Two types of fat, omega-3 and omega-6, are both essential for human health. But, the typical American consumes far too many omega-6 fats in their diet while consuming very low levels of omega-3. The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 1:1. Most Americans consume 20 to 50 times more omega-6 than omega-3.

Omega-6 sources are corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oil, the primary oils used in processed food.

Your omega-3 sources are flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and fish.

Your body cannot produce omega-3 it therefore it must come from your diet. Most American adults and children are deficient in this “good” fat. Allergies, arthritis, eczema, asthma, ear infections, constipation, attention deficit disorder (ADD) and other learning disabilities have all been linked to a deficiency of omega-3 fats. It is very important for children and adults to consume enough omega-3, a good 50 percent of your brain and retina is comprised of essential fat needed for proper nerve transmission and learning patterns.

The lack of the omega-3 in pregnant women might be a cause of both postpartum depression and the development of symptoms popularly diagnosed as ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome and even mental retardation in a newborn. During pregnancy, almost all of a woman’s omega-3 reserves are used to form the brain of the developing fetus. So the need for Omega-3 starts at conception not at birth.

Omega-3 is also anti-inflammatory, and is great alternative to anti-inflammatory drugs. Reducing inflammation caused by arthritis and helps in prevent arthritis in the 1st place as well as other inflammatory diseases.

It has recently been found the Omega-3 also help in preventing nerve damage and assist in repair when the body has had an injury.

Food manufacturers don’t use ingredients high in omega-3 because they grow rancid quickly.  They use hydrogenated oils, which have a long shelf life but also create trans fats in the foods as a byproduct of the hydrogenation process. Research links trans fats to cancer, heart disease and a number of other chronic diseases, making them the “number one killer in America today.”

While fish is an excellent source of Omega-3 fat, the level of toxicity showing in up our tuna (mercury) and salmon (dioxins and PCBs) is frightening. Eating wild caught fish helps in reduces these toxins.

Incorporating high-quality fish oils and or high quality flax oil is one of the best ways to be assured you and your children are getting enough omega-3 fats. Krill oil is by far the superior fish oil, but is also the most costly form of omega-3. The best quality essential fatty acid blend I have seen is  Labrada EFA LEAN  and you can’t beat the price.

Making sure our brains are getting the proper nutrition is so important for developing brains as well as preventing age related diseases. So add some good fats to your family’s diet and improve everyone’s health.
